Practice, Study, Learn, Succeed
I’ve been thinking a lot about how people become successful at something. Whether it be an athlete, student, doctor, lawyer, actor, musician or any career person, the way they get to the top of their game and hone their craft is through practice and studying. If you want to get better at something, you need to practice. You need to do it over and over again until you get it right. You need to study it; learning all aspects of the subject and again, practicing it or repeating it until you know it inside and out.
I’ve been contemplating ways to change my behaviors with respect to emotional and mindless eating . I realized one of the ways that I can help myself is to develop a tool or plan and then, practice and study. One of the tools I worked on during this New Year’s Day was flashcards. I have always found flashcards to be a beneficial way to study. My mind seems to be able to absorb the information better in small increments! I made up quite a few flashcards with positive affirmations and behavior-changing statements…
For now, I am keeping them on my nightstand. I plan on practicing and studying these every morning when I wake up and every evening before going to sleep! I want to learn everything I wrote on those cards and put them into practice in my daily life. That would be a huge success!
I also got out my vision board…
I’ll be adding a few things to that this weekend:)

I decided to start off the New Year with a major butt-kicking. Remember the 30 Day Shred? Yeah, Jillian somehow knew that I ate hoagies and mac n’cheese on New Year’s Eve and wanted to give me the business! Level 2 – holy plank-oli! I was heaving and huffing and briefly thought that having a heart attack would not be a good start to the New Year! But, I powered through and it felt great!
After that beating, I was ready for some breakfast. I opted for an egg sandwich on wheat bran bread. Hit the spot…
I spent most of the afternoon cleaning and doing laundry, then I got busy making some dishes for our NY dinner with my parents and Gram. I snacked on Chobani yogurt with strawberries and Trader Joe’s High Fiber O’s in between…
Just as I was finishing up, Gram and my parents came wearing party hats from their New Year’s Eve celebration in the city…
Party animals!!!
The dinner menu consisted of “good luck” dishes…
Lentil soup….
pork spare ribs…
steamed pork buns …
chicken wings (Dad really wanted these!)…
black-eyed pea salad…
My plate…
I also ate a couple of chicken wings and a few nibbles of spare ribs! Don’t get me, Jillian!
My parents brought this box of artisan chocolates for dessert…
After a fun game of Pictionary, everyone went home and we called it a night!
I read over my flashcards and drifted off to sleep to dream of 5k’s and healthy days
Have a great day, everyone!
Have you ever heard of a vision board? Do you have one?

Great job, Marisa. Love the idea of the flash cards! Good for you! Okay, so do tell, what’s a steamed pork bun? What’s in it? Sounds good, anything with pork and a bun!

Great idea with the flashcards and vision board.
Dinner looked good too.
I love your cards. I have a spiral notecard book with my Beck mantras in them (including 1 card that just says ‘no’ LOL). They are good – I should put them on a vision board.
Yours is quite pretty, too!
This is a GREAT post!! I love writing affirmations and doing vision boards, I actually just finished my third one over the holidays. It is very centering for me to create them and I believe that It really does help us focus on and achieve our goals!

I am going to have to check out that 30 day shred as well.

Hi Marisa. I just stumbled across your blog today and mmm… the foods looks great. Hehe. I agree with you that to succeed, you need to practice, study, and learn. This is essential in anything in life and I just wanted to say thank you for reminding of of that. Hope 2010 serves you well!
P.S. You have great writing by the way (index cards).

They are called Cha Sui Bao. I got them in the frozen food section of my local Safeway grocery store. Check out this post for more : http://www.loserforlife.com/2008/12/lunch-break/
I love the flash cards. What a fantastic idea.
I’ve also been wanting to put together a vision board to. Such a better way to focus on goals rather than just setting New Years Resolutions. I’m totally a visual person.

I have heard of a vision board but never created one. Instead of mindlessly watching TV, maybe I could get busy making myself a board. Your flashcards are a most EXCELLENT idea. I am still in school, and when it’s time for a test, I always turn to flashcards. I need to put that on my to do instead of watching TV list too.
I’ve heard of one and seen other people do them on blogs. I think they are a great idea, as are the flashcards. What a great way to reinforce your personal goals and objectives!

I love the flashcards. I’ve heard of vision boards and even read “The Secret” but haven’t made a physical one yet although I can see it in my mind.
