Taking Our Time

It’s gonna be a rude awakening come Monday morning when I have to get up at 6 a.m.  Since the daughters have been off from school, I have been lounging around in bed til 8 a.m. and taking my sweet time doing anything in the morning!  Even my exercise schedule is off.  But, I guess that’s what the holidays and “vacation” is all about :)

Since, I got around to breakfast so late, I decided to go light with a slice of wheat bran toast with PB2 .  I’ve been into almond butter lately, so I kind of forgot about my good old PB2.  So yummy…

With a big cup of Peet’s Mocha Java in the french press to get me moving…

I got working on taking down my Christmas decorations and staged them all in the dining room where I pack them up.  Such a chore!

I decided a run was in order, but there was NO WAY I could venture outside in 20* weather.  I am not that brave!  I was thankful that I could head to my cold –but –better –than -20* –basement  to run on the ancient treadmill.  I did 35 minutes before lunch was calling me.

I came right up and headed to the kitchen.  I wanted to use up some leftover chicken (made chicken cheesesteaks for the husband and daughters last week – recipe to come!) in the fridge, so I combined it with this new boxed veggie  from Green Giant…

The yellow carrots sounded interesting, but the navy beans and spinach sold me on it!

I topped the chicken (oh, and a scoop of Danica’s leftover Healthy Au Gratin Potatoes) with half the veggie mix.  It was so delicious.  I loved all the flavors…

After more cleaning (why does it NEVER end?!) and a good shower, I got ready for date night with the husband.

We decided to try out a local place called BIG FORK Restaurant.  The restaurant was small and comfortable with a slight rustic feel…

The menu was also small, but impressive.  I had a tough time deciding what to order…

IMG_2705

I started off  with the Baby Arugula Salad with house white balsamic dressing and an herb dinner roll…

IMG_2714

Although, the mac “n” cheese was tempting me and after much deliberation, I opted for the special -  Turbot with julienned squash over mashed potatoes and finished with a champagne butter sauce…

IMG_2718

It was fantastic!  I really took my time to enjoy all the flavors and savor every bite!  I did share a little with the husband :)

I was pretty satisfied, but we decided to have a sweet treat to end the meal.  I ordered the Apple Tart with caramel and vanilla ice cream ( who wouldn’t?!)…

IMG_2720

The husband opted for the Profiteroles with chocolate sauce…

IMG_2722

I had a couple bites of both and let the husband finish them off.  They were both delicious!

It was a bit of an indulgent night, but I felt comfortable with what I ate.  I tried to enjoy it all, guilt-free, since we don’t go out to eat all that often.  Or get to talk uninterrupted!  Happiness…

ONE GOOD THING:  Hey, I passed up mac “n” cheese!!!  That’s progress, right ? :)

When eating out, do you try to make the healthiest choice regardless of whether you want it or not?  Or just choose what you are in the mood to eat?

I think it depends a little on where we go. There are some places where we go just to order certain dishes. Other times I try as hard as I can to find out what’s on the menu ahead of time, and most times I stick to it. Occasionally something sounds too good to pass up, though! But it’s always a choice, so if I do eat something unplanned – I enjoy it and never regret.

It’s hard getting back into the old routine, but for me, the old routine makes this journey so much easier. Still, that extra couple hours of sleep makes a big diff.

It depends on what the rest of my day looks like but I hate having food envy at restaurants so I normally go for what I really want. Sometimes that also ends up being pretty healthy so it’s a win-win.

Yesterday I had an amazing thin crust pizza and was completely satisfied – much better than getting a flavorless salad…

Yes there is always cleaning! And always laundry too…

Your dinner looked awesome. I’m glad you were able to have an enjoyable night out.

Looks delicious! Especially the desserts ;)

As far as what I do when eating out, I try to make healthy choices while simultaneously ordering something I want to eat. I can’t eat something I simply don’t want even if it’s really good for me, but I also don’t want to go crazy and order something I’d love at the moment, but be angry at myself for eating later. It’s all about the balance!

When eating out I first ask myself, “Is this a celebration?” If not, I try to make the healthiest choices by avoiding fried foods and some of my other trigger foods. If it is a celebration I treat myself, but I have to be careful of not going overboard.

Life is all about celebrating successes. So, celebrate the fact that you passed up the macaroni!

Looks like a lovely date night! :)

Hubby and I usually split either some appetizers or an entree. We also usually split a dessert. We used to “go all out” when we went out but started to make more conscious choices a little while ago. I think we both still really enjoy the food and the alone time, but we don’t feel stuffed anymore like we used to in the past…

Have a good “real”week! :)

I love this post! I am back on schedule tomorrow and a bit bummed about it! All the food out looks great, I love it and it’s ok to treat ourselves! Yum!

It depends when I go out. Sometimes I look ahead, make good choices, etc. Sometimes I don’t and just go on about things and eat what I want. It’s okay to have what you want sometimes! Like mac n cheese. Yummmms.

i feel you on the waking up tomorrow morning. i guess i did have to work last week but it was so slow that it didnt feel all that painful! i think it’s great that you indulged a little bit at dinner! a fun date with the hubby is definitely a reason to eat a little something special. i tend to order a little indulgently when i go out, then make lunches and dinners at home that are healthy for a balance!

I’m going to look for that Digestive Health veggie mix. Looks like a great mix for a quick lunch or dinner.

I just read your post from yesterday and I really love your flash cards. I admit I giggled at the “I will not eat food left on others’ plates” Haha! I can only trick myself into thinking that eating Paige’s leftovers is not going to hurt me for so long. And you make an excellent point about practice and study. It’s so easy to forget really good ideas and recipes and tools.

I love PB2 it helps with my peanut butter portion control issues. ;-)

I eat healthy at restaurants. But I never pass up a bite of someone’s dessert…it would be rude not to and those calories don’t count, right?

good for you for passing on the mac and cheese! the BIG FORK looks amazing! I love when foodie bloggers go to restaurants, I get to learn a little something from the experience!

the apple tart looks phenomenal, you have worked so hard and dserved thsi!

I eat very healthy in general so when i go out to eat I usually pick out a healthy (ish) dish becuase thats usually what I am in the mood for anyways! although if I am craving something like flatbread pizza or pasta I get it! if you hold out for what you really want, you are more likely to overeat later!

Hey Marisa! Happy New Year!
I was just thinking about routines today. I’m so happy to be back in mine as well. I was so out of whack last week! I think my kids were, too – it’s nice to have things back to the way they were, although I do love the holidays. I took down my decorations this weekend, too – and my house seems so dull now. Oh well – soon I will put up the Valentine’s Day stuff, lol!
