Yoga Ain’t For Wussies

Hi!!!  Hope everyone had a great weekend.  Mine was relaxing.  I pretty much barricaded myself in the house since it was freezing cold.

I lounged around most of Sunday morning, reading blogs, having coffee and basically avoiding the E word.  Yep, exercise is still not on the top of my list.  I’m in a slump, but the guilty thoughts that I should be doing some of it hovered over me like a black cloud.  I finally stopped tweeting about it and decided to actually do something.  I thought I would try yoga for a change.  I had a DVD laying around and tried it out…

IMG_3376

Holy kick-my-assness!  I only did 20 minutes.  After the first 4 minutes, I was huffing and puffing and felt all heated up!  I liked the downward dog and sun salutations.  I even did okay with the warrior pose.  I stunk at a couple of the other poses because my balance is way off and I still suffer from vertigo when I get into certain positions.  I have to say that I was shaking at the end!  Who knew yoga could be such a great workout?!  It’s definitely not for wussies ;)

Good thing I had a nice breakfast before getting my yoga whipping.  Nicci over at Nifty Eats posted a delicious sounding baked oatmeal that I had to try!  I changed the recipe up a little to accomodate what ingredients I had and to bring the POINTS down.  I omitted the almonds and almond butter (although they would have been rockin’ in it!), used 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze and blueberries since I was out of strawberries.  It was so good…

IMG_3357

Thanks for the great recipe, Nicci!

And I sipped on some paw  french- pressed coffee…

IMG_3360

Lunch was pretty boring.  My standard turkey wrap and carrots…

IMG_3361

But, I did add in one new goodie… do you see it?  Here’s a close-up…

IMG_3362

This delicious item is a No Bake Brownie Ball!  I found the recipe on Snack Girl’s site and well, she had me at brownie.  You know I had to make these.  They reminded me a lot of the homemade Larabites that I’ve made, but in a chocolatey version.  Good on their own, but even BETTER with 1/2 tsp. peanut butter.  Happy :)

In my laziness of the day, I didn’t have a particular plan for dinner, but knew that pasta would be the choice.  I have sooooooo much pasta in my pantry right now.  My parents have moved out of their house and are preparing to have their new home built.  In the meantime, I have inherited their whole pantry of pasta and other goodies.  I have a ton;  I’ll probably end of donating some of it to the food bank!

I decided to make orecchiette pasta with spinach and garlic.  At the last minute, I mixed in these Giant White Beans (Greek Style) from Trader Joe’s

IMG_3368

These remind me of the Greek Lima Beans that our friends brought to our barbecue one summer.  So, so tasty!  I loved them and they were excellent with the pasta and spinach…

IMG_3370

I couldn’t help myself;  I had a pretty big bowl of it and it was well worth the 12 POINTS…

IMG_3369

Despite the filling dinner, I was craving some dessert.  I tried out making an individual cake in the microwave.  Not bad!  I need to tweak it a little more before I share the recipe with you all.  I took one “for the team” and ate it anyway ;)

Total – 29 POINTS

ONE GOOD THING:  I think I really like yoga!!!

Have a great day, everyone!

Have you tried yoga?  Do you find it to be a good workout?

I’m officially trying yoga this evening as my whole “make over my lifestyle and diet” plan… we’ll see how it goes! I have a different DVD but I figure anything is better than doing nothing

Yoga is the one thing I have vowed to try to incorporate into my workouts. I need to find a good beginner dvd because I am absolutely NOT flexible. I can’t make brownies. NO self control. They would call me. Too much temptation. I make my kids sugar cookies because there is no chocolate involved and I don’t get the “call”.

I am definitely trying out that brownie ball recipe! I’m looking for healthier dessert recipes. Thanks for sharing:)

Ok so the brownie balls got my attention! Anything chocolate calls my name. The pasta dish looks good too.

The few times I’ve attempted yoga have left me quivering, cursing and weeping. Not for wussies, indeed…

I have Leslie Sansome You Can Do Yoga, it is for beginners, and I love it.

Does yoga on Wii Fit count? :) I do ok with it but am always sore the next day. I can not do the Standing tree to save my life. I call it the Angry Tree.

I have not tried yoga. Only on WiiFit! lol. I’m k ind of afraid b/c I have no balance either, but I also don’t try it b/c I’m into the high impact aerobic exercise! But I know people have said it’s a good workout and I should try it.

How do you make your pasta (like, what do you do to incorporate the spinach and garlic?). It looked so good!

Marisa Reply:

I just saute spinach(leaf spinach) with garlic and a little olive oil. When I cook the pasta, I scoop out about 1/4 cup of the pasta water right before draining. Add the pasta to the pan w/spinach, then add a bit of the pasta water so that it makes a little sauce (starch from the water combines with the oil and garlic). Add in a couple tsp. grated parm and it’s good to go!

Yoga can be a great workout but other times I find that it’s a good stretch. I guess it depends on the type of yoga.

Your food looks so delish!

I have been doing yoga on the wii fit and it is great.

Keep going with yoga. I think that people give up becuase it’s mentally exhausting at the beginning and demands that you are actually present in your exericse.

I use yogadownload.com and LOVE it!

I remember before I tried yoga years ago, I thought it would be a great way to relax. I had visions of just gently stretching… Boy was I in for a surprise! I remember shaking after just a few minutes of class (but I was too embarrassed to give up)… I regularly went for several years but haven’t done regular yoga in quite some time now and really want to get back to it. I know I really need to work on my balance…

Have a great week!

I agree. Yoga isn’t easy. It can, if you make it, be downright hardcore. It’s a great workout.

Why can’t my wraps look like yours. they always fall apart. I was locked in my house all day Saturday…i like being lazy sometimes. lol Yoga is Fun, I need to check out some new dvd’s.

Hey Marisa,
I can’t seem to do yoga! Everytime I try I just give up because I can’t do the first pose:)

Anyway, did you know you can take cake mix and add half as much water and cook it in the microwave? I have never tried it with and “healthy” or organic type mixes but with a regular cake mix you can get a little dish and spray it with Pam and then put in like 1/2 c. mix and 1/4 c water. Stir it together and cook it for like 1 minute. if it isn’t quite done cook it a little longer. SO yummy and there is no oil or eggs in it to add calories. I have to say though I have always topped it with hot fudge but I am sure you can figure out some way to top it that is better for you.

I love your blog, btw!

I love the idea of mixing the gigantes (one of my TOP favorite foods) with pasta and spinach… gonna try this! Thanks!
