A Little More Action

Hi everyone!  Did you enjoy gyrating with Elvis??  I’m not really a fan, but I do love that song!  I listen to it on my runs and it gets me going!  And after this last week of celebrations around every corner, I need to get going on the healthy eating track again.

I’m motivated to get down to business now.    One thing that usually helps me is to write down what I eat.  When I was strictly doing the Weight Watchers program that was the tool that was most useful for me.  Even if I didn’t do well with writing down every POINT, I always made sure to journal what I ate.  It worked then and I’m sure it’s a key tool for me now.

I have noticed after all this time, in some very teeny tiny way, that I am falling into some type of natural or intuitive way of eating at least with respect to making choices that are better for my body.  My meal choices are generally healthy.  Gone are the days of McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  My snack choices have changed, too.  Gone are the days of Cinnabon or giant soft pretzels.  (Well, okay, I do still dig into the Cheetos sometimes ;) )  However, my portions could use some tapering and my snacking could use some reigning in.  So, I know the “whys”, now I just have to stop talking about it and take action.  *cue Elvis again*

I hit the gym first thing for 40 minutes on the Arc Trainer.  I brought my Gym Juice with me…

Then, it was home for breakfast – Banana Nut Vitatop with 1 tsp. peanut butter…

Lunch was a wrap with turkey, hummus, bacon and spinach.  It was an interesting and tasty mix…

Along side was a sweet orange and the lamest carrots.  They were on the way to veggie heaven :(

IMG_4872

A light string cheese and Trader Joe’s mini edamame crackers curbed the afternoon munchies…

The weather was beautiful for grilling again.  I love not messing up the kitchen!  I grilled organic, free-range chicken thighs that I seasoned simply with salt, pepper, garlic, a few dashes of Tandoori spice and a light coating of raita

and served it with steamed broccoli, naan and a bit more raita

I really like this yogurt dip from Trader Joe’s.  It is very fresh tasting and a great accompaniment  to chicken.  I would love to try it with grilled shrimp or salmon, too.

Glad to be back in action today!  It was nice to hear all of your action plans, too. We can do it!

Have a great day, everyone!

What is one tool that help you stay on track with losing weight and/or keeping it off?

Planning is one of the biggest helps for me. Leaves few opportunities for brain dead kind of moments that slip me up !

Planning is a great tool! I find when I plan my meals for the week, it’s easier to stay on track, too!

Apparently, my biggest tool is my husband. Thanks to him, I haven’t given up on C25K yet.

Marisa Reply:

Yay for supportive husbands!

One tool… hmmm… that’s hard! Up until last week I was following WW very strictly and my biggest tool was tracking. Now with trying to more towards inuitive eating I would say stopping when I am full and only eating when hungry, although that is challenging. I may start writing down what I eat, but not points, as you mentioned… just for some awareness.

Listening to our bodies is the hardest thing! Sometimes my body tells me it wants brownies and I have to go (sticks fingers in ears) “lalalalalalalala, I can’t hear youuuuuuuu”! ;)

My favorite tool for helping me stay on track is my fitbook…it’s a great little workout and nutrition journal that helps me set goals, record my progress, and make improvements. I don’t know what I’d do without it!

Marisa Reply:

I do know that about you!

Planning and tracking are definitely key for me as well. I also have to constantly think about where I started and how unhappy I really was, that really helps to keep me motivated. It also gives me confidence when I look back and see how far I’ve actually come.

That is a great tip!

Best tool is my digital scale. Even if I don’t write down my foods (I have been experimenting with a few non-tracking days), I always weigh my portions. My eyes want to be a lot more generous than a real portion size :D

Marisa Reply:

Yes! I have to get my scale back out, too!

I feel like this month has been a bust. Though my eating has been just fine for 95% of the time, my exercise has not. Allergies hit hard this year.

I’m with you on getting into action. Let’s make these last two weeks count. Today I’m going for a run at the Y.

Marisa Reply:

Run, Kelly, Run!!!!!

I’m currently on WW and tracking keeps me on target. I’m much more accountable if I have to put pen to paper. I hope to one day be where you are and rely on intuitive eating. I’m not there yet, but I’m certainly making better choices on a daily basis.

Marisa Reply:

I’m not completely comfortable with it yet, but I am proud of every good choice that I am making along the way! I agree with you on tracking; it does keep me accountable, too.

My scale. It is my big red flag! Second fitday. I log everything I eat(during the week). Weekends are where it all seems to fall apart. Monday’s is my get it back together day. Generally those things are what I rely on.

Marisa Reply:

Ugh, weekends are rough!
You’re doing great!

Tracking what I eat is the biggest tool to help me stay on track. Planning some meals for the week and making sure I have healthy fruits/veggies in the fridge is a close 2nd!

That yogurt dip seems interesting. I was just at TJ’s too! I will have to pick some of this up next time!

And good job with the food today, looks like you had things under control!

Marisa Reply:

Thanks, Amanda!

I don’t think I could narrow it down to one thing. For me it is a combination of things. Journaling, planning, exercise, whole foods, sleep and a positive attitude,

Marisa Reply:

Sleep and a positive attitude are KEY!

I love your new header! It looks great!

To help me stay on track… I always tell myself to focus on eating when I’m hungry. I never try to diet. I know this sounds so easy and cliche, but it works for me. The minute I think about dieting, I rebel. Everytime I want to eat, I have to ask myself what I’m hungry for. It really helps me stay in the moment!

Marisa Reply:

Thanks! I’ve been wanting a new header for a while!

Yes, I think when I tell myself not to eat something or that I’m on a diet, I want everything that I’m not supposed to be eating on that diet!

14 fittingbackin { 04.20.10 at 2:14 pm }

Probably my food scale – i’m lost without it!

I’ve never been on an arc trainer before – they look cool – and that wrap looks awesome!

Marisa Reply:

Arc trainer is an awesome calorie torcher!

15 JourneyBeyondSurvival { 04.20.10 at 4:57 pm }

Yeah, my best tool is my scale. I weigh every day. Because I like to have a head’s up when things are going right or wrong. That and DON’T BRING IT[food badness] IN THE HOUSE. Yeah, that works too.

16 Tamara { 04.20.10 at 5:11 pm }

Hey Marisa! It’s been a long time since I dropped by but I have been reading. I love your new header!

You know what that Raita would be good on? Black beans. I’m serious. We have a President’s Choice Raita in my neck of the woods and I put a few spoonfuls on some black beans and it makes a really yummy side dish.

Marisa Reply:

Hi, T!!! Glad you are back :D

That is a FANTASTIC idea for the raita! I can’t wait to try that!

I think keeping a food journal helps everyone- not only WWers. :) I keep forgetting to tell you- I love the “newer” header on the blog! Looks great! :)

Marisa Reply:

I agree. Something about writing things down makes it more conscious eating rather than mindless eating.
Thank you for the nice comment about my new header!

Even after all these years I still occasionally track what I’m eating. I find that it is easy to slip into a habit of eating too much. Even if it’s healthy those calories still can add to a gain if I’m not diligent about the whole thing.

Oo, that sauce on the chicken looks delish!
The scale usually tells me when I’ve been eating too much.
