A Moment Of Silence

Today, I mourn the loss of a good friend who was always there for me.  Very old, fragile and often times possessed, either moving at the speed of light or slowing to an almost screeching halt.

But always there, through rough times and stormy weather.

Today, I said good-bye to my tried and true…

I think my 5 miles on Sunday pushed her over the edge :(

She served me well over the past 2 years.  Before I joined the gym this September, she was my main source of exercise in the early mornings.  She also was instrumental in my transition into running.  We had lots of fun on those 5K Saturdays!

Now, she’s gone.  She was about 16 years old.  It was time. :|

After the husband and I put her out by the trashcans gave her a proper burial, I came in for breakfast – Banana Nut Vitatop  with 1/2 tbsp. natural peanut butter (helloooooo, Bell Plantation, where is my PB2??!!)…

and the press…

I did some work around the house, then met up with Mom and Gram for furniture browsing (for Mom’s new house) and lunch.  We decided on Chick-fil-a (Gram’s favorite) where I always get my favorite there – Chargrilled Chicken Garden Salad with Light Italian

Later in the afternoon, I dug into one of these new bars from Cascadian Farm

IMG_5127

Almond butter??  I’m all over it! :D

The nutrition facts are decent, too…

IMG_5128

Crunchaaaay…

IMG_5130

I really liked these bars.  They are crunchy and sweet.  Maybe a little too sweet , but sometimes you need a little sumpin’ sumpin’ in the afternoon.  ;)

I decided to make it easy for dinner and let us all join tastebuds and eat the same thing.  Hot dogs, fries and salad fit the bill.  Don’t worry, the family didn’t drag me over to the dark side.  I did it Loser for Life style!

We all know that hot dogs aren’t the healthiest thing, but these guys are actually pretty decent…

IMG_5132

They are made from select cuts of certified organic beef and are only 70 calories and 4.5 grams fat per dog!  The sodium is high, as with all hot dogs, but no higher than some of the canned soups out there.  And they taste fantastic.  Just like the full of fat ballpark kind!

I served them on whole wheat hot dogs buns from Trader Joe’s.  I’ve already broken the family in on these, so no complaints were heard there.  On the side, I made baked fries, a big salad and served up a few dill pickles.

My plate of goodness…

IMG_5137

I only had a couple of fries for the taste because  I really was satisfied with everything else on the plate.

Since I didn’t fit in exercise earlier in the day, I headed to the basement after dinner for a workout.  Where is the treadmill ? :(

Instead, I found a new friend…

IMG_3079

I spent 30 minutes getting to know this new friend, then did 15 minutes of strength training with 5 lb. dumbells…

  • chest fly – 2 sets, 12 reps
  • incline bench press – 2 sets, 12 reps
  • lateral raise – 2 sets, 12 reps
  • reverse fly – 2 sets, 12 reps
  • shoulder press – 2 sets, 12 reps

It’s a start!  Every time I do strength training, I realize how much I like it.  I don’t know why I never seem to stick with it!   It’s really cool and makes you feel so strong when you’re done.

Do you strength train with weights?

So sad about the treadmill – but so GREAT that you wore it out rather than just using it as a clothes rack. Which, has happened in my house before!!

Marisa Reply:

Haha! That has happened in my lifetime, too :)

Looks like you got your money’s worth out of the treadmill. I’m the same way w/ weight training. Hoping it’ll be easier to stick to once I’m back at my gym. And oooooh, uncured beef hot dogs – I need to find those! Looks good.

Funny, I’m more intimidated doing weights at the gym. I guess I don’t want to look wimpy with my 5 lb. dumbells -lol!

LOL! I had that tune in my head as we “buried” her!

So sorry about your ‘loss.’ I can’t believe that baby lasted 16 years! Holy cow. :) She had a good ‘run.’

Marisa Reply:

True that :D

We tried those hotdogs last week! They were good, but a little greasy. Next time I’m going to try the turkey ones.

Marisa Reply:

I didn’t find them greasy, just juicy. Surprising since they only have 4 grams of fat compared to other hot dogs with 16 grams!

i must try those hot dogs!!

Marisa Reply:

Definitely try them! I found them at Trader Joe’s and have also seen them in the natural foods freezer section of my local Giant supermarket.

I have 5 and 8 lbs weight, need a 10 lb but haven’t picked them up yet. I use mine at least 2x/week and love them. I have biceps and triceps now. Never had them in my 20’s, pretty cool I have them in my 40’s!

Yay for the 40’s Gun Show!!!

I tried those hot dogs after seeing you post about them some months ago and they are very good!

I do strength training here at home using free weights. Hubby is teaching me some new exercises to get rid of my bat wings. I think it is working too.

Marisa Reply:

Would you be willing to share some of your exercises? I would LOVE to get rid of my bat wings. Or flubber, as little daughter calls it :|

Poor treadmill. I pass along my respects!

I strength train a little. Not as often as I would like. I would like to fit it in 3 times a week but don’t really get there. My schedule is really full right now.

I usually go to the gym for a class (kickboxing or step) and do the powerflex afterwards, which is weights /abs. That’s about all I get in. But it’s good. I do it 1-2 times a week.

I too shall respect your treadmill with a moment of silence. Such a loss. I hope that your new friend brings you some solace.

Too funny! I had a treadmill…once upon a time. But it was a clothes rack so i gave it back to my mom. Glad you found a new friend!

Too bad on the old mill. Now you are an outdoor runner!

Weights!! Big yay to those! Lift even heavier (work up to it, obviously). The heavier you lift, the more calories you burn and get all that good fat burning muscle going! Plus you can kick ass if you need to ;)

15 Graze With Me { 04.29.10 at 4:14 pm }

We have a Bowflex (that NEVER gets used!) but I prefer my free weights and one of Jillian’s workout DVDs over it.

I got my treadmill from a neighbor’s yard sale for $75 two years ago. This thing is *ancient*. The numbers don’t always show up and it drains batteries for the display like crazy (I keep one battery in and out when not in use) plus the knob to increase speed is broken so I just grip the little part that’s left and turn. My fingers are crossed that it will last me a few more years.

RIP Treadmill :*(*****

we are your reverse here. Ive used my bike for 12 years (!) and husband announced he wants to buy a treadmill.

not sure what I think about that yet…

as far as hot dogs go, i’m a big fan of that brand. but how come your whole wheat buns from TJ’s look so different from MINE?!

20 Sarah { 05.02.10 at 10:49 pm }

Sad you have to let the treadmill go, but good thing you wore it out!

21 Kari in MN { 05.03.10 at 5:46 pm }

That’s the same treadmill I have!!! I have a new goal now – try to wear it out – that would be quite an accomplishment. Keep up the good work – love your blog posts!
