Haywire
Things are a little haywire around here, so I’m going to make this quick…
Breakfast wasn’t the first priority of the day, sadly. Our fridge is on the blink, so I had to switch things out of it and into our second fridge/freezer in the basement. Yes, we do have another. It’s a requirement if you’re Italian
I finally got around to being able to make something. Since it was pretty late morning, I opted for a Blue Protein Smoothie…
In the mix…
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup nonfat cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup plain soymilk
- 3 drops NuNaturals liquid vanilla stevia
- 4 ice cubes
I know cottage cheese seems like a weird thing to put in a smoothie, but it was actually a great addition! I’m not big on using protein supplements and powders. I’d rather go the whole foods route. Cottage cheese has an excellent amount of protein (1/2 cup contains 14 grams of protein) and a neutral taste, making it a good choice for my smoothie.
After my liquid breakfast, I ran some errands and came back home to meet up with the fridge repair man. Ka-ching, ka-ching. Parts are on their way : |
Thankfully, he wasn’t charging by the hour for this initial visit because we ended up getting in a long discussion about Food, Inc., believe it or not! He grew up on a farm and told me quite a few stories of how things ran on his family farm in Michigan. Interestingly, his father raised cows that were grass-fed and he said they tasted terrible! I told him about my burger experience and he understood why I wasn’t a fan. We really bonded, this fridge repair guy and I. He’s even bringing me some of his homemade venison jerky when he comes back with the million dollar part to my fridge
All that talk of food had me starving! After he left, I tore apart the pantry looking for lunch. I decided to mix up a simple salmon salad using canned wild Alaskan salmon, carrots, celery, 1 tsp. dijon mustard, 1 tbsp. light mayo, s +p…
which I ate along with leftover sauteed zucchini…
No exercise was to be had today. I was feeling miffed about it. The remedy? Go for a walk? Get in a quick workout? Do jumping jacks for a few minutes? No. Eat Cheetos. Swear. Big daughter finally ran away with the bag, so I wouldn’t eat them all. Note to self: find your own planet to live on where Cheetos do not exist.
Dinner was another date with the grill. This time we tried out the organic, free-range, hormone- free chicken. We had much better luck with these. Very tasty and served up with a side of roasted broccoli and whole wheat flatbread…
That’s all she wrote!
Have a great day, everyone
Do you use protein supplements/powders?

Um, yes! I rely on protein powder for many fabulous things, but I also love, love, love other protein sources like blended cottage cheese.
Sorry to hear about the fridge…my ice maker is broken and I’m putting off calling the repair guy as I think it’s going to cost me too many pretty pennies!

Oh man, don’t tell me grass-fed beef tastes terrible!!! I just can’t buy the regular stuff anymore after watching that freakin’ movie, lol.

People who like it tell me you have to try different farms. Apparently, all grass-fed doesn’t taste exactly the same. Must depend on the type of grass.
I use cottage cheese in my smoothies, too. I like to add it to the ones I make with hemp protein powder, since you mix that with water – gives them a creamier, more “shake-like” consistency. Sorry to hear about your fridge – but think of all the extra calories you’ll burn hauling food up and down the basement stairs.
I love using cottage cheese in smoothies! I also use greek yogurt in smoothies too! I use to use protein powders… not so much anymore.
Have a great day
I used to use protein powders but they all taste too chalky to me. I have yet to find a decent one and I prefer my protein from liquid egg whites now.
Cottage cheese in a smoothie – who’da thunk it!! Perfect idea!
Oh hugs ! Fridge problems rank right up with plumbing problems in hassle, expense and leaving you with this weird lost in the wilderness kind of feeling !!
I have tried the protein powder thing once and was not really impressed. Like you, I would rather get it from actual food.
Great idea to use cottage cheese! Do you use a low-sodium version?
I need to limit my carbs and have higher amounts of protein in my diet because I’m insulin resistant and very carb-sensitive. As a result, I’ve learned to love egg whites, lowfat cheeses, nuts, nut butters and cottage cheese. At times, I’ve also used protein powders.
Users really have to be careful to make sure they’re getting a good product. All protein powders are different–some are still high in sugar/carbs, while others have significant amounts of cholesterol. There are also so many different sources of protein (whey, soy, hemp, etc.). It’s very difficult to pick a good one.
For those who are interested in incorporating protein powders into their diet, here’s a good summary of how to pick one:

Thanks for that link, Tina! Yes, I feel that a lot of these protein powders are so loaded up with junk ingredients that I’d rather just find regular food sources of protein. At least I know what I’m ingesting!
Blue Protein Smoothie…Yum and salmon salad another YUM! yes I use protein powder in my spinach smoothies. I find since I have started eating cleaner I don’t end up getting enough protein to build muscle, so it helps give my diet a better balance.
What a shame the frig is broke but who knew you would find a new friend because of it!
I do use cottage cheese or Greek yogurt in smoothies or to make a quick soft serve frozen dessert. I sometimes use protein powder to boost the nutritional well being of a smoothie so I can count it as a meal not just a snack!
I think using cottage cheese is a great idea! I do have a GIGANTIC container of protein powder that I bought last year- it was $45 bucks! I think when it is gone, I will try the cottage cheese way!
THANKS for the idea!
Look at you makin friends with the fridge guy!
haha
oh…stay away from those CHEETOS! lol

I know!! Where were you when I needed you to save me!!!
I love that you bonded with the fridge repair guy! lol. And I love that he is bringing you something! Sorry about the cash you had to spend though.
I should try roasted broccoli. Looks good!
I gave up meat as a challange to myself in January, and still have not touched beef or chicken since the first of the year. After watching Food Inc, I too was affected and decided I could without for now. I haven’t sworn myself to vegetarianism, and I still eat fish. All that being said…
Holy God, that peice of chicken looks mouth watering. What’s the saying, you want what you can’t have? I want MEAT!

Haha! I felt the same way when I was vegetarian for Lent!
Lord, I’m out of it. It took me a good 30 seconds to remember what exactly Cheetos were… ha!
We have an extra freezer too. It’s the “meat freezer”. I should post about it sometime, although many may be grossed out by it. We buy a quarter of a cow every year (in addition to my husband’s hunting) so that freezer is stocked. The beef we get is from a farm in Nebraska (family friend) who raises cattle organically and humanely. No hormones/antibiotics are ever used. Makes me happy.
Beware the sodium in cottage cheese!
I do but only because I ADORE (esp in the summer months) my protein shake.
made
plopped in freezer for a few hours.
eaten with spoon.
