Taking Action
No time for a leisurely breakfast today! I had an early morning wake- up call to run! My running partner, Kerry, met me at the paved trail where we knocked out 3.56 miles doing 3:1 intervals a la GYMBOSS…
It was pretty humid out there and my energy took a dip around the 2.5 mile mark. It was a weird feeling; one minute I was okay and the next I just felt this drain of energy and kind of weak. But, I recovered with the next interval, so I’m not sure what was up with that!
The best recovery of all…
Clean Eating Brownie Waffle topped with plain nonfat Chobani and strawberries! There is a waffle under there…
Most of the day was spent getting ready for vacation! Part of the “getting ready” process was using up the leftovers. Grilled Eggplant and Bread Salad with a sprinkle of parmesan for lunch…
Although, I would not recommend making this salad in advance since it tastes best room temperature, I was surprised at how good it was cold and how well the Ezekiel hot dog bun bread cubes held up. I expected them to be completely soggy, but the weren’t!
Unpictured snacks were the last of the Triscuits and a lite string cheese. I almost chowed down a 1/4 bag of SunChips to “just get rid of them”, but I stopped myself after a few chips. I knew I really didn’t want them, so I put them away.
The interesting thing that I noticed – the act of putting them back was slow and controlled. Almost as if I was giving myself time to change my mind and dig in the bag. But, once they were out of my hand, I felt relief. Major overeating crisis averted. It showed me that these instances of bingeing do take a concentrated effort , both mentally and physically. I can’t explain how inane the internal dialogue was that was going on in my head during it. It was an “angel/devil” type of conversation pinging back and forth – “eat it, don’t…you want it, you don’t.” But, I couldn’t FULLY talk myself out of it until I made the actual physical motion of putting the bag back. I know this sounds ridiculous over some stupid SunChips, but it really brought to light that getting over these episodes requires as much of an ACTION as it does a mind shift. They have to go together; happen together. One without the other still leaves you wanting, desiring and having compulsive feelings. But, the action and the mind shift being cohesive and working together makes it go away. Hope that makes sense ?!
Anyhoo… dinner. Digging up the last of what’s in the fridge for a kitchen sink salad…
- romaine lettuce
- diced roasted chicken breast
- red onion
- cukes from the garden
- carrots
- dried cherries
- olive oil and good balsamic vinegar
Crunch, crunch, crunch.
Yep, it’s crunch time! Gotta get packin’! See ya at the beach! Whooo hooo!
Have a great day, everyone!
What are your favorite beach eats? (so I can glean your ideas

Nice job on the run!! When it comes to beach food… I love sandwiches of any kind… as long as they’re not too messy
I can really relate to the angel/devil situation you went through with the Sun Chips. I’ve been struggling with that lately… lost recently in the form of Double Stuf Oreos… I have the same internal struggle you described.
As for beach eats- I love wheat thins and sharp cheddar… not really a unique idea but it’s a personal fave at the beach lol.
Hmm, I live at the beach…so everything.
Nah, I love fresh, local seafood. It’s the best.
We always bring a smaller cooler along with containers of cut up watermelon, pb&j sandwiches and wheat thins. I always stick a spray bottle of clean water in the cooler to spray off our faces when we get out of the saltwater or if we get too hot in the sun. Hope you have a great time!
Clean Eating Brownie Waffle topped with plain nonfat Chobani and strawberries looked devine! Beach eats absolutely fresh local seafood!
Fruit, veggies, sandwiches or shrimp and some yogurt!
That Brownie Waffle looks heavenly…
I like to bring fruits such as grapes, blueberries, or strawberries. I also brought some veggie chips the last time I went and they were magnificent! Just make sure the seagulls don’t get to them..
I HAVE to make those waffles! I was going to make them last night but I had no applesauce and made my last banana into soft serve. oops!
going to the beach here and going to the beach in Florida are very different (you can drive and park on the beaches here). Here we take stuff to grill, usually fajitas, burgers, dogs, etc. Grilled on the beach tastes SO much better than at home, not sure why. Texas allows you to have fires in small grills usually on their beaches.
When we go to vacation in Florida we take with us: sandwiches, sangria, water, fruit. And for DBF and his family usually a mass of chips, crackers, nuts etc. They pretty much graze all day at the beach, I eat my stuff and refrain from theirs.
I love how empowered I feel when I make good solid choices. There are still times when I fall into an out-of-control snacking, but I feel as though I’m getting on top of it more and more. Posts like this one are a real inspiration to keep striving toward smart living. Thanks!
That humdity is a killer right now. I’m so jealous that you get to go to the beach- enjoy!
Oh. You are crew-el. Really you are. I want those waffles now. I have smears on my screen not from my children.
My favorite beach eats? Things that don’t require a lot of prep or even on site assembly. Watermelon, water, crackers, cheese, that sort of thing. I like to be able to go from cooler/container to mouth since sand in my food is disgusterous.
Those waffles look so good. Clicking over to view the recipe now.
Favorite beach eats for me are grapes and pretzels.
Fresh shrimp! Any way, shape or form!!
Funny you mentioned sun chips, because those are some of my favorite beach eats, along with simple sandwiches. Sandwiches & sunchips=beach eats for me! Good for you on putting the chips away after a few instead of eating the rest. And what you said does make a lot of sense–of the action and the mindset going together to make the change concrete.
Sweety, you’re killing me with those waffles.
[...] Have a great day, everyone! And thanks for the awesome beach eats ideas! [...]
Hey,
those waffles are devinine! I made them for breakfast today because lucky me had all the ingredients on hand!
I topped mine with whipped cream and Nutella and they are so low on points/calories. Unbelievable. Plus I finally figured out how to make decent waffles in the waffle maker!
