It’s Officially Summer
Today was the daughters’ first official day of summer vacation! No early wake-up calls, rushing to school or running to afterschool activities. We got to sleep in a little and spend the WHOLE day together…
Okay, it really wasn’t that bad
We actually had a nice day of shopping for summer essentials! Before heading to the mall, I fixed a quick breakfast – egg whites and 2% cheese sandwiched between 2 slices of toasted Ezekiel bread (6 PP) …
Then, we hit up the stores where the daughters scored some great deals on a few cute tanks, skirts and shorts. They were so excited!
I hadn’t planned on staying at the mall for lunch, but it got late and the crew was hungry! Chick-fil-A won by unanimous vote. I went with my standard choice – Chargrilled Chicken Salad with light Italian (6 PP) …
We made a quick pit stop at home and moved on to the local produce store for much needed fruit and veg…
Today’s haul included…
- 4 lbs. bananas
- 2 lbs. strawberries
- 1 pint blueberries
- 12 gala apples
- 1 lb. red seedless grapes
- 1 mango
- package of romaine hearts
- pint of grape tomatoes
- container of baby spinach
- bag of red peppers
- package of 3 portabella mushrooms
All that was only $24.00!
I grabbed a gala and paired it with a light string cheese for afternoon snack (1 PP)…
Dinner was another salad making use of leftovers from our Father’s Day feast. Chicken, Tomato and White Bean Salad served on baby spinach with shaved asiago cheese ( 9 PP)…
Here’s the recipe for Tomato and White Bean Salad …
- 1 pint grape tomatoes
- 1 can (14 oz.) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
- handful fresh basil, shredded
- 1 small clove garlic, minced
- s + p to taste
- 3 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tsp. red wine vinegar
Mix ingredients. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
Makes 6 side dish servings (heaping 1/2 cup) at 2 PointsPlus per serving.
This salad would be great with tuna or shrimp added for a complete meal!
I wanted something sweet after dinner, but I’m sticking with my sugar- free resolution. Fruit wasn’t sounding exciting, so I opted for a Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar instead (6 PP) …
Staying away from refined sugars is hard, but it seems to be working to help diminish my cravings. And it’s helping in the weight department, too! This week I lost 3 lbs.!
Since I didn’t get my weights workout in this morning, I’m headed to the basement to pump some feathers iron!
Have a great day, everyone!
What do you spend the most on with your weekly food budget? I definitely spend the most of fruits and veggies. I try to buy meats when they’re on sale, but I always spend for fruits/veggies no matter what price they are! It definitely helps to have a local discount produce store, though!

I think I spend fairly evenly on everything. I still can’t bring myself to pay a whole lot for produce, although maybe I should.
You go girl! Three pounds! Woo hooo!
Glad to hear that the sugar-free thing is working for you! Three pounds is awesome! Congrats!
Enjoy the start of summer that side of the world. I am so looking forward to the fact that earth is starting to swift today and that we are on our way out of winter
I spend most of our weekly grocery money on fresh veggies. Fruit I get apples, oranges and pears and they keep fresh the whole month in my fridge
YAY on your 3lb loss!!! That’s awesome!!! I definitely spend the most on fruits & veggies and meats. We stock up on meat when it’s on sale but we definitely buy a lot of fruit for the hubby. He is NOT a veggie fan!
Okay, that screaming lady picture made me snort! That’s how I kinda felt yesterday – I have two weeks of complete free time before camp starts. AHHHH!!!
Congratulations on the 3 pounds, lady!!!
I tend to spend a lot on meat, just because it is expensive!!! But I’m finding I spend more and more on produce, which is a good thing!
Woo hoo! Congratulations on the 3 pound weight loss. That’s fantastic.
Great job on the loss!
Sounds like you and the girls had a fun day shopping!
I spend a lot on produce. I usually go 2X a week for fresh stuff. I guess there is a seasonal farm stand that just opened here this week that Sean’s parents have been going to for years. I hope this saves us some $$! lol
I spend fairly even on most things. Give the kids a week and they’ll be driving each other crazy. However, mine can make each other crazy, but if one of them is gone they miss each other.
Pump some feathers?! You crack me up!!!! Congrats on the 3 lbs gone!!! I definitely spend the most of fruit and veg. We eat ALOT of both. I buy all my meat and staples on sale….and DO get our produce at a very reasonably priced market, but still…..it adds up. Good thing I married for money not love! HA!!!! Not…
I probably spend the most on fruit and veg too. Although, baking supplies like flour, oil, butter, and sugar, probably come in pretty high too!
Good job on steering clear of the sweets, and the weight loss. Woot!
Wow, congratulations on the 3 pounds gone!
You know, I don’t even really look at what I’m spending on groceries – I figure that if I’m buying healthy food, I shouldn’t worry about it. Far cry from how much I used to spend on fast food, anyway.
Glad you had a nice day with your daughters!
I definitely spend the most money on fruits, veggies, nuts, and cheese.
Congrats on the loss! Awesome!
I spend a lot on fruits and veggies too. Happy Summer!
3 pounds – bravo!!
We spend the most on stuff like dairy. Cheese, milk, and yogurt (greek) are more spendy – especially when it isn’t the junk brand. We also spend a little more on meat because we get the ethically grown stuff.
And don’t forget real maple syrup. That stuff is expensive!
Thanks, everyone! I’m so happy to see the scale moving in the right direction again!
COngrats on your loss! I stock up once a month on meat and pantry staples like rice/quinoa/lentils/beans and buy fresh produce 1-2x a week. I’m single and live alone, so it’s not too expensive. It’s definitely worth it, though.

Hi Meghan! I know it seems overwhelming at first. Start with eliminating any sweets or baked goods that you are eating. Then you can move into the other refined sugars that are in foods. When you start reading ingredient labels, you’d be surprised how much sugar has made it into all the foods we eat! I did a “No Sugar Experiment” a while back. You can read more about my experience here: http://www.loserforlife.com/2010/06/the-results-are-in/
